From
Thursday 18 to Friday 19 January 2024, the beneficiaries of the
"Innovative project to improve agricultural production by recovering
bio-waste through vermicomposting" have been receiving a second series of
training courses on vermicomposting techniques in the commune of Kigamba in
Cankuzo.

This session
is organised by
World Future
Active with the facilitation of the company IMISIBA (specialised in
vermicomposting techniques) and the project is being implemented with funding
from the French Embassy through PISCAA-PASEF.

The objectives
of this training phase are for the beneficiaries to :
·
Understanding
the definition and importance of vermiculture, identifying the different types
of earthworms and their role in the ecosystem.
· Obtaining an overview of the vermiculture process through a farm visit, and setting up a vermiculture farm.

The second
day focused on the step of setting up a successful vermiculture farm, from site
selection to the day-to-day management of the worms.
The
objectives of this stage are to :
·
Knowing
how to choose a suitable site for vermiculture and prepare the soil
accordingly, mastering the steps involved in creating and maintaining culture
beds.
·
Understanding
the daily needs and best practices for worm management.
·
Site
selection, soil preparation, installation of culture beds, their daily
management and maintenance.

These
training sessions were led by Franck FERRENBACH, an expert consultant in
vermiculture and soil conservation, and were attended by 45 beneficiaries from
the 3 groups, 15 people each, who are members of the CMDI cooperative in the
commune of Kigamba.

WORLD FUTURE
ACTIVE and its network of project partners will also support the beneficiary
groups in accessing empowerment opportunities through coaching and support in
accessing markets in circular value chains, including the value concepts
"Waste VS Resource", the recovery of bio-waste through
vermicomposting, as well as agricultural practices for the conservation of
living soil, which will help to increase the population's income and promote
the economic empowerment of women and young people.
